The Wall

The Wall - "Hard-won stillness, captured in the fleeting breath of a wave." Captured on a chilly spring morning at 56th Street Beach in Newport Beach, California, "The Wall" is a moment where everything aligned just right. The first light of day dances across the crest of a powerful wave, casting golden reflections on the water’s surface and bringing the motion of the ocean to life.

This photo is incredibly special to me—not just because of how it looks, but because of what it represents. Surf photography is a whole different world. It’s one of the most physically and mentally demanding types of photography I’ve ever done. You’re treading water, holding a heavy camera in a bulky underwater housing above the surface, making sure the lens port is clear of water drops, trying to focus, staying in position while the tide pulls at you, and then firing the shutter—all without knowing if you got the shot until much later.

I have so much respect for surf photographers. It’s an entirely different discipline that requires not just technical skill, but endurance, timing, and instinct. "The Wall" is a rare moment where everything came together just right—the light, the motion, the position, and the shot. It’s a reminder of how rewarding those hard-earned moments in the water can be.
