New Yorker's Backyard
“New Yorker's Backyard” — Early Summer
I’ve always been fascinated by how many people flock to the meadow in Central Park the moment the weather turns warm. It used to almost confuse me, what was the draw? But standing there this past summer, camera in hand, I finally understood it. When you look uptown from the grass, the skyline fades just enough that you forget you’re in one of the biggest cities in the world. There’s something really special about that contrast, this huge pocket of calm surrounded by all that chaos.

This photo captures that feeling for me. It’s busy, but in the best way. Everywhere you look there’s a little moment, a story happening. Friends picnicking, someone reading, a game of catch in the distance. It reminds me of those Where’s Waldo books from when I was a kid, so many details to get lost in, all stitched together into one big, peaceful scene.
